Periodically, every planet (except the Sun and Moon) goes retrograde. The one we’re most familiar with is Mercury, which retrogrades three or four times a year. For approximately two months, every two years, Mars appears to spin backward through the sky.
When any planet goes retrograde, the energy of that planet is turned inward. You get a chance to re-think, re-evaluate, and revise. With Mars, this retrograde energy gives you a chance to get in touch with your deepest desires. Add Virgo’s focus on discrimination, self-analysis, and ability to blend body and spirit, and you get a rare opportunity to make serious changes for the better.
Mars is the planet of action, and about the least introspective planet in the zodiac. Mars is aggressive, passionate, and direct. During retrograde, this wild energy is internalized. You might feel nervous, irritable (Virgo), or a little paranoid. If you’re someone who makes quick decisions, you might hesitate instead of leaping into a new project. Good. If you usually hesitate, you could feel the need to leap. Don't. Impatience and aggression won't win under retrograde Mars.
Mars rules speed, sharp objects, weapons, and machinery. Everyone could become more accident-prone. Use caution around all machines. Be prepared to make a few repairs. Watch your fingers when chopping the salad. If you have to use or carry a gun, don’t let your guard down. Walk, bike, and drive defensively.
Virgo rules daily routines, work, health, and pets. Mars rules the head. You could catch a cold or the flu more easily. This is a great time to reassess your health and/or diet as long as you don't obsess about it or opt for a fad-of-the-moment. You might have to revise a project at work, or you could have second thoughts about something you’ve just started. Don’t. It’s fine to go ahead with projects. Virgo’s attention to detail is beneficial.
Mars retrograde teaches us to restrain our impulses. Anger management is key. The rules are reversed now, and he who punches first usually ends up losing the fight. Same goes for the picky, critical side of Virgo. Watch how you communicate, as well as what you say.
The signs/rising signs that might be affected most are Mars-ruled Aries, Scorpio, because of Mars’ influence as your ancient ruler, and the mutable signs of Virgo, Gemini, Sagittarius, and Pisces.
The House position of Virgo in your horoscope chart shows where this transit is most likely to affect you.
First House – Self-image. This is a great time to check into confidence-boosting activities and education. Do something that scares you, even if it’s going to a horror movie alone. Taking little courageous actions can have long-lasting results.
Second House – Finances. Curb your spending. Try to put more money toward paying off a credit card or other debt. This is a good period to revise your budget and/or start repairing your credit, if needed.
The Second House is also about your personal values. This is a good time to reevaluate what means the most to you. If you aren’t living it or striving for it, now’s the time to make a change.
Third House – Communication. Dump the subscriptions to publications you never read. Revise your phone/cable/Internet budget and look for a better, more inexpensive package. Catch up on your reading, especially self-help, education, or nonfiction. Check your car, lawn mower, any “machines,” including your computer and printer. Keep your cool in traffic, or on public transportation. Mechanical delays can happen.
Fourth House – Home and Family. Don’t start a fight. Don’t yell at the kids. Be proactive about solving problems, but only after you’ve thought out a solution. Keep an open mind. You might sense that something’s brewing under the surface, but playing bad cop won’t get you anywhere. You might not find out what's going on until Mars goes direct in mid-April. Make repairs around the house and check all your security systems including smoke detectors and carbon dioxide monitors.
Fifth House – Creativity and Romance. This is a good time to relax at home instead of going out. Have fun with children, they’re feeling the pressure of this retrograde too.
Sixth House – Work and Health. It’s especially important to pay attention to your health and diet. Virgo rules the Sixth House, which increases the impact of Mars’s retrograde transit. Don’t get into battles at work. Use caution around any machinery on your job, including the copier.
Seventh House – Partnerships. It’s time to get whatever’s been bothering you out in the open. However, don’t fight, talk. You can solve old issues and lay groundwork for repairing rifts in any relationship. Be careful of passive/aggressive behavior in both you and the other person.
Eighth House – Marriage, Sex, and Inheritances. You might have sex on the brain and no one in your bed. Or you have a partner, but you’re not feeling the urge. Both cases are temporary. Watch joint finances with your partner or spouse. Pay attention to the fine print of any contracts. Don’t get obsessive about anything or anyone. Work on reducing your long-term debt.
Ninth House – Higher Learning, Philosophy, Religion. This is a good time to learn about other people’s belief systems. You might read an astrology book. You might be reluctant to discuss your feelings about any of these subjects. You could also question your personal belief system. It’s okay to question. That’s how you find the answers.
Tenth House – Career and Public Recognition. Reassess your business and make needed adjustments. You might second-guess yourself about a professional move or project. If you use Virgo’s analytical power to think it out, you’ll find the right solution. Now is not the time to jump ship. New ventures can work, if you make a plan and move slowly.
Eleventh House – Friends and Groups. You might feel like getting away from the crowd. This is a good time to reassess your personal goals. Are you on the right path? Are you walking it with the right people?
Twelfth House – Dreams, Subconscious, and Intuition. Meditate. Give yourself lots of “me” time. Solitude is beneficial and helps you to get in touch with your inner feelings.

Mercury's final retrograde of 2011 is in Sagittarius. Mercury will be more erratic than usual during the next three weeks as Sagittarius expands the margins of misinformation and errors. Sagittarius is also the opposite of Mercury-ruled Gemini. This further garbles messages and meanings.
Sagittarius is one of the mutable signs as are Gemini, Virgo, and Pisces. All of you need to be especially aware of what you say or write and more skeptical of what you hear and read.
All of us should check and re-check information we receive as gossip can get out of hand. Watch how you say something as well as what you say, and when you choose to say it. Sagde isn't known for good timing. You could get caught with your verbal pants down. This is not the time to get overconfident or make impulsive decisions.
Technical glitches and time delays could be a little more annoying than usual. If you're heading to a Black Friday sale or plan to do any holiday shopping before 12/15, take time to read guarantees and return policies. Don't fall for a fast and heavy sales pitch. Don't let your eyes get bigger than your wallet. The flip side is that, if you look hard, you could find some fabulous deals this season.
This retro period is also compounded by the influence of the Sun, New Moon, and a Solar Eclipse, all in wild and crazy Sagittarius. Misunderstandings can go global during this kind of energy blast. Sagittarius does everything on a bigger, but not necessarily better, scale.
I've just told you about the precautions you should take. Here are the benefits of this powerful phase.
Sagittarius is the sign of higher consciousness, spirituality, and optimism. The focus is on revising your goals, plans, and career/personal directions. This retrograde lays the groundwork for our shift into the new year. 2012 is going to be a year of change, breakthroughs, and freedom. Use this retro period to think about where you need to break free, revise goals, fine-tune plans, and move ahead both in your personal and professional areas.
Changes you make during these final weeks of 2011 will help set the pace for 2012. Brutally honest, but always optimistic, Sagittarius never does anything halfway. Be honest with yourself. Reassess where you are headed. This dynamic influence can help to rev your energy and enthusiasm so that you head into the new year in the direction you choose, not the one someone else may have planned for you.

Good Luck, bad luck, or business as usual? We run from black cats and step over cracks in the sidewalk. The number 13 is bad luck, while 7 is the one we pray for when shooting dice. We humans are a superstitious bunch. Whether or not you believe in the power of numbers, today's prime lineup of the number 1 has special significance.
Take a few minutes to tap into the energy flow. Meditate on your dreams and goals. Write them down if you wish. Light a white candle if you wish. Or just take a breath, clear your head, and be mindful of who you are and what you want from life. The best times to send your good thoughts into the Universe? 11:11 a.m. or p.m. wherever you are.

I've been busy working on my new book about Mercury. Stay tuned!
In the meantime, remember your "re" words. Revise, review, repair, recheck, re-think, re-evaluate. The list goes on, but you understand. Mercury can cause miscommunication, lost messages, and electronic glitches. Back it up. Check it out. Get it fixed.
Until August 8, Mercury backs through Virgo then slips into Leo until it turns direct again on August 25. Here are five special tips for this cycle.
Tip One: Get organized. Does this look like your desk? I've been there too. Remember that a retro period is a good time to dump your junk. While Mercury retros through perfectionist Virgo, you'll be surprised at how much you can accomplish in just an hour or two a day.
Tip Two: Watch your mouth. Virgo has a nitpicky side. Leo is the king of drama. Off-handed remarks get blown out of proportion. Conversations can become confrontations, and rumors multiply like bad reality shows. Be careful what you say and how you say it.
Tip Three: Listen...with both ears...to your intuition. This a great time to reassess both your personal and professional relationships and start fixing what's wrong.
Tip Four: Review your health habits. Virgo rules everyday health and your digestive system. Leo rules your back and heart. Schedule a checkup if you need one. Schedule one for your pet too. Virgo rules small animals. Make a plan to stop an unhealthy habit.
Tip Five: Make time to play. Take a long weekend or a mid-week afternoon off. Do something that makes you feel good.
I'd love to hear your Mercury retro stories - the good ones as well as the annoying ones. Post here or send me an email.

Mercury, the planet of communication and ideas, is retrograde in impatient, action-packed Aries. Your mind could buzz with new ideas and brainstorms. You could also receive invitations, offers, and meet new professional and personal contacts. You could feel energetic and enthused.
That’s the good news.
The caution is to pace yourself and think before you act. Remember that Aries is the sign of impulsive behavior, and is ruled by competitive and hot-headed Mars. During a retro period in Aries, your mouth can easily kick into gear about ten steps ahead of your brain. The result? Pissing contests, bad business deals, and lust-vs-love affairs.
On April 11, Mercury spins backward into Jupiter, then into Mars on April 19. This is the critical phase of the retro period and it’s critical to consider your actions before you proceed. Make sure you understand what you’re agreeing to before you jump into a project or take on more responsibility at work. Give yourself breathing space instead of jumping into bed, or dumping a relationship. Impulsive action now can turn into a major regret later. On a bright note, these days are good finds ways to inject new energy into old projects, ideas, or habits.
Here’s a sign-by-sign look at how Mercury Retro in Aries could affect you.
ARIES (MARCH 20 - APRIL 19)
Retro Mercury in your sign makes what I said above even more crucial for you. It could be harder to make yourself understood as others misinterpret your intentions, meaning, or both. Speak slowly and clearly, check and recheck emails, texts, reports, letters, and any other communications you initiate before you send them. Don’t leave voice mails unless it’s just, your name and number for a call back.
April 19 is a critical date for you because the Mercury/Mars connection could make you edgy. Be especially careful what you say, and how you say it, or a snappy or off-the-cuff comment could bring you a load of trouble. Until Mercury goes direct on April 22, it’s wiser to get the facts and plan your next move. Otherwise, you could get caught in a too-good-to-be-true snafu that will make you want to bash your head against the nearest brick wall.
TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)
Retro Mercury in your Twelfth House can churn up secrets you’re trying to hide. The best way to protect yourself is to be aware of what you say and to whom you say it. That, and don’t get drunk and spill your guts. Conversely, if you hear something about someone else, (gossip, a juicy tidbit at work) keep it to yourself because chances are, it either isn’t true, or you could get caught making it public. You may have some wild dreams. Write down what you can remember. You could have a revelation about your personal or professional life. This is a great period to forget that you’re always right, and take a look at your life from a more objective angle.
April 11 to 19 are good days for you to escape for a few days R&R – make sure the car’s tuned up and double-check reservations, or to find a new meditation or relaxation technique.
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)
With Retro Mercury in your Eleventh House of Friends and Groups, you can expect a certain amount of miscommunication in your social, professional, and personal groups. Either you, or they, can get dates mixed up, miss messages, forget dates, and generally, feel like you’re speaking different languages.
Because you’re ruled by Mercury, your natural ability to multitask might be challenged by extra projects or opportunities. Make sure you have the time and resources to take on more responsibility or you could get overwhelmed. It’s important to stay organized. Expect to hear a few voices from the past too.
Paying extra attention to your closest relationships can strengthen them.
CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 21)
Retro Mercury is in your Tenth House of Career and Public Image. You don’t function well under pressure, so try not to add more responsibility or projects to your to-do list unless you’ve already made plans. Taking on extra work now can drive you crazy. Plus, you could make novice-type mistakes that make you look bad. Work hard, but steady to make better progress.
From April 11-19 the stress could build, either at home or work. Meet it head on because, when the dust settles, you could be in a better position to pull the strings.
LEO (JULY 22 - AUGUST 22)
Long-distance travel and/or communications could get skewed while Mercury retrogrades through your Ninth House of Travel and Higher Learning. Education issues require your close attention to avoid feeling pressured and/or overwhelmed. Work could pile up and problems with scheduling classes or meetings could surface.
If you’re planning a trip abroad or checking on study opportunities in other countries, this retro period could toss a glitch in your arrangements. Investigate your options and work through the details and everything should straighten out again after the 23rd when Mercury goes direct.
VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22)
Retrograde Mercury in your Eighth House can stir up old arguments and relationship tangles that you thought were finished. You might have to renegotiate a contract or take another look at a partnership. A pushy or reckless person might try to bulldoze you into doing something you aren’t ready for or that is against your principles. Don’t be railroaded into anything.
If a deal or loan runs into a snag, be patient. Losing your temper or demanding a quick closure will only cause more problems. Reread the fine print and don’t rush the outcome.
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22)
Mercury's retrograde through your Seventh House of Partnerships can bring old flames and ex-lovers crawling out of the woodwork. Although you might be happy to see a couple of these people, chances are that, at least one, will be a name you’d rather not see pop into your ID screen or mailbox. Don’t feel obligated to respond. The good news is that you could be better equipped emotionally to stand up for yourself now, especially after April 11 when Jupiter and courageous Mars make a strong link to Mercury.
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21)
Retrograde Mercury could bring mix-ups at work. Stay on top of projects and don’t let someone else’s disorganized manner interrupt your progress. Changes could be forced on you after April 11, but if you roll with them, chances are you’ll be in a stronger position in May.
Ideas you’ve had and shelved could pop to the front of your brain again. This is an ideal time to review and rework a plan, presentation, or sales pitch. Refining your technique could have a huge payoff.
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21)
Mercury's retrograde through your Romantic Fifth House could churn up old feelings and memories. You could be tempted to make an impulsive move but you’re advised not to stir up old feelings unless you’re prepared for the consequences. You could get turned down. Or you could regret contacting someone from your past.
The positive side of this retro period is that one of your creative desires or ideas could resurface. Maybe you’ve let a hobby or interest slide because you’ve been too busy. Now’s a great time to renew the fun.
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19)
Fourth House retrogrades often bring up family issues that you thought were over and done with. With Aries firing your emotions, you could get irritated and angry at someone who could decide to start nagging you. You also have an opportunity to take another look at something and resolve it in a more positive manner. Then you’ll not only get rid of the problem, you and everyone close to you, will be happier.
This is a great time to check your home and attend to any maintenance or repair issues.
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18)
Retrograde Mercury spinning through your Third House can muddle conversations and messages. Slow down when you speak if you want to be understood and listen carefully to what others are trying to tell you. It’s easy to get into arguments and stand-offs under this hot-headed influence. Work off tension with a run or extra exercise.
PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20)
Money and Values are in focus when Mercury retrogrades through your Second House. With Jupiter, Uranus, and Mars also spinning in Aries, you run the risk of overspending, especially if you’re stressed about something.
On the Values side of the retrograde, now is a good time to take a look at your creative side or talents that you’ve let slide. If you need extra income, and who doesn’t in this economy, you could come up with an easy way to dust off one of your abilities and rake in the dough.

Sunday's New Moon in Aries adds even more mayhem to a sky already filled with wild energy. This anything-goes Moon joins the Sun, Jupiter, Uranus, and retrograde Mercury in this impulsive sign. The resulting shoot-from-the-hip force can make us feel as if we're on a runaway roller coaster. Although the next few days are ripe to bring opportunities, invitations, and lucky breaks, the best way to snag something good is to slow down. Think about your options and don't rush. You'll need to stay organized and keep your eyes open because navigating the upcoming week can be as tricky as maneuvering an L.A. freeway during rush hour. Here is a sign-by-sign look at how this dynamic energy could impact you:
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
At the moment, it's an Aries universe. Many of you industrious Rams are about to take a giant step forward. Even some of you wild and woolly types may receive an out-of-the-blue offer. The caution is not to jump too fast because retro Mercury, also in your sign, adds confusion to your already overstimulated system. Although you hate to take advice, it's wise to listen to your partner or a close friend or colleague who can help you to slow down and avoid an impusive move that might be a mistake.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
You are decidedly not one of the most impulsive signs in the zodiac. That's why the current warrior energy of full-speed-ahead Aries may make you feel like a hamster on an electric treadmill stuck on high. Instead of panicking, take a break. If you can, schedule a day off or a long weekend. If not, turn off the noise in your head with a book, a trip to the movies, or anything that will take your mind off the pressure. The stressful energies from other star connections could also cause errors at work or a delay in a decision you're waiting for. Not to worry, it's temporary.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Thanks to a glut of activity in Aries, you could be tossed into the middle of a hot, new social group. However, because this New Moon collides with your retrograde ruling planet, Mercury, you're advised to keep at least a couple of toes in your friendship comfort zone. You may be the social champ of the zodiac, but this bunch could be too far out, even for you. This week, make time for your established friends and contacts. A bonus: Many of you can expect to receive good financial news such as a job offer, raise, larger-than-expected tax refund, or a small windfall.
CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)
Get ready to take center stage, or have it thrust upon you under the Aries New Moon. Make sure to look polished and professional, even at the grocery store. Leave your rumpled-but-comfortable clothes at home this week. This is a perfect time to get assertive and sell yourself or an idea under this dynamic vibe. Don't be afraid to push out of your comfort zone.
LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22)
The New Moon in Aries might give you the yen to travel or learn something new. This is a good week to check out opportunities for more education, long-distance travel, and new adventures. You could have very vivid or predictive dreams. Write down what you can remember because one may help to answer a personal or professional question. Some of you might realize a publishing opportunity such as a book, article, or paper.
VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22)
Many of you are still in the middle of a change or closure concerning issues with other people. Maybe you're dealing with an inheritance, a parent, a divorce, marriage, or loan application. You might be tired, frustrated, and impatient to get it over with, but you probably have a few more steps to take before everything's settled. Your reputation for being cautious won't help you under this action-oriented New Moon. You'll have to take charge if you want to make progress. Just watch your critical side because this ride is going to be a little bumpy for everyone.
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22)
For you, the Aries New Moon (and all the other Aries energy) lands in your relationship sector. Impulsive behavior isn't your style, but the pressure (and irritation) you might feel for someone close could erupt into a little war. Minor stuff can blow into a major fight. Your partner could be as irked with you over something you've left in your should-we-or-shouldn't-we zone too long. Try to see things from his or her perspective this week.
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21)
There's a concentration of red-hot energy in your area of work and health, but it's not necessarily good. You tend to take everything personally and a work-related crisis might get very frustrating this week. If you overreact and think that you're the target for some kind of underhanded scheme, you'll cause more damage and probably look like an idiot to boot. Be cool. Be professional. Everything should quickly return to normal. As for your health, pay attention to an old or chronic condition that might flare. And don't exhaust yourself with either too much work, or too many late nights.
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21)
The Aries New Moon could toss you into a partying whirlwind. This may sound like Dream Week to you, but try to restrain yourself. You could run headlong into a big problem because this energy also brings a few obstacles. Maybe you get caught driving under the influence, or you come face-to-face with an old rival or jerky ex. Have fun, but don't get hot to move in with a new romantic partner too soon, or think that a fling is anything more. Otherwise, you'll damage both your reputation and your heart.
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19)
Your home and career lives could clash in some way this week. The Aries New Moon can cause a tug-of-war that puts stress on each. For example, something at work may affect your family such as long hours, cutbacks, or your decision to change jobs. Or tensions at home could make you less effective on the job. Whatever happens, the best thing for you to do is not to make demands or rush to make a change. For now, assess your options and pace yourself.
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18)
For you, communication can be just plain awful this week under the conflicting vibes of the Aries New Moon and retrograde Mercury. Watch every word, don't get into a pissing contest with a sibling or neighbor, and think before you speak to anyone. This also goes for the written word, texts, emails, notes, letters, and reports. This is a good week to brainstorm because you're likely to have loads of new ideas swirling through your head.
PISCES (FEBRUARY 29 - MARCH 20)
The New Moon in Aries lights up your finances. It could also light up your desire to spend too much under this reckless energy. Focus on setting realistic financial goals and working on a budget. You also can get a reality check on what you really value. This is a good time to assess what you want from life and to think about how you can achieve it without losing yourself in the process.

A Super Moon occurs when the moon is full during its closest pass to Earth during its regular orbit. What makes this one special is that it’s both full and at the closest distance to Earth in the last 18 years. However, as is being wrongly stated all over the Internet, it is not the only Super Moon we’ve had in 18 years. They happen four or five times a year.
Did it cause the Japanese earthquake on March 11? No. Astrologically, we might contribute some of that action to Uranus’ move into Aries, on that date, which I’ll discuss in another article.
Can it cause more disasters? I don’t think so. The moon does influence ocean tides and the tides are always higher during a full moon. When the moon is both at its closest point to earth and full we will see even higher tides. But another great flood? No. How about random natural disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions? I highly doubt it.
When you think about the forces inside the Earth, the force the moon exerts on it is minimal. The moon affects the tides of the oceans on the surface of the planet. Even a Super Moon doesn’t have the pull to rip the crust apart and cause an earthquake, or pull the lava out of a volcano. In already unstable areas such as the Pacific Rim’s Ring of Fire, the added pull of a Super Moon’s torque would add to the pressures in the area. Unless an event was already about to happen, the moon alone couldn’t cause it.
This Full and Super Moon is in Virgo. Virgo is the sign of perfection, health, service to others, work, and small animals. This weekend is a good time to focus on your health and overall well being.
This is a great time to get away from your routine for a couple of days. Take a long weekend or have a mini staycation at home. Virgo is full of nervous energy, so try to make time to relax.
A Full moon sheds light on hidden areas of our lives and this super moon is especially bright. Mercury (the ruler of Virgo) and Jupiter are hanging out together in the sign of Aries which makes this moon a powerful force for initiating change. Uranus’ move into Aries fuels sudden insights and a whole new way of looking at our lives. The caution is the opposition between Uranus and the Moon, which causes challenges. The emotional attachments and baggage we have must be balanced with newer, sudden transformation.
The Full Moon in Virgo can makes us more critical. Using our intellect the right way can pay off in good results, but it’s hard not to worry. Write. Make a to-do list. Make a have-done list too to remind you of what you’ve accomplished. Stay organized.
Everything is more magnified under this influence so being nitpicky, self-critical, and bitchy can cause more trouble than you bargain for. Gossiping is especially harmful and can come back to haunt you sooner than later. Be careful.
Stay active. Have fun. Let your mind escape the everyday minutiae.
The “super” in Super Moon comes from its appearance. Weather permitting, watch it rise tonight. It will look huge, close, and stunning.
